Resources

This page is my list of resources, books and other useful knowledge that have helped guide me down the path of a modern hunter, fisher and forager. Each one is a precious source of information that I’d like to pass on to future generations of adventurers!

If you have any interest in foraging, I would say that you need to purchase one of Samuel Thayer’s books. Nature’s Garden : A Guide to Identifying, Harvesting and Preparing Edible Wild Plants is what got me into foraging. It opened up a magical world of edible plants that I didn’t know existed right out my front door. At the very least make sure to visit his website below.

One of my key inspirations, and the best blog that I read every week is written by Hank Shaw, self described hunter, fisher, chef and naturalist. His posts are innovative and eye opening. I don’t think there is another person out there finding more food in more different corners of the forest. Find his work at the website below, or better yet, buy his cook books. There are no better references out there for cooking wild game. His books include instructionals on field dressing, butchering, preparing, storing and cooking just about any type of wild game you can think of. My recent favorite is Buck, Buck, Moose. For a great introduction to hunting, fishing and foraging for your own meals I suggest diving into his first book, Hunt, Gather, Cook : Finding the Forgotten Feast.

New to Hunting? I’ve got just the books for you, and they just so happen to be two of my favorite coffee table books, though my girlfriend would point out that the coffee table is not meant to be a book shelf, and I need to keep less books lying around. Steve Rinella of The MeatEater Podcast and TV show fame, (incidentally, the podcast is one of my favorite sources for hunting information, and very entertaining) has written a pair of books that break down all the important steps to becoming an avid hunter. From small game like squirrels and rabbits, to the big trophy animals like moose and deer, Rinella nails everything you need to know to get yourself out the door and hunting for the first time. Its not just a beginners book either. I’ve been hunting and fishing since I was 10 years old, and found plenty of interesting information, tips and tricks in the Complete Guide to Hunting, Butchering and Cooking Wild Game.
